“In the aftermath of Smurf’s (Ellen Barkin) heist, the Codys have to protect their reputation, while friends and enemies from the past close in,” the “Animal Kingdom” Season 4, episode 13 synopsis teases.
In the “Smurf” promo video, J (Finn Cole) says that Smurf ran their town, but they’ll have to earn it. In the previous episode, J shot Smurf in the head after she threatened to murder Pope(Shawn Hatosy).
After her death, J took control of the situation, and told his uncles how to cover up Smurf’s murder so there wouldn’t be an investigation about her death. Now that Smurf is gone, it appears other criminals plan to move in on her territory.
The Cody boys will be forced to fight for their place at the top, but will Smurf’s death cause them to fall apart?
“Deran (Jake Weary) realizes there is only one way to keep Adrian (Spencer Treat Clark) safe,” the “Animal Kingdom” Season 4, episode 13 synopsis says. In the TNT promo video, Adrian questions whether Deran plans to come back.
In the previous episode, Deran planned on using fake documents to help him and Adrian leave the country. After Adrian refused to tell the cops information about the Cody family, he was expected to be sent to prison for his refusal to cooperate.
Once Smurf found out Adrian was talking to the cops, she told Deran if he didn’t kill him, she would have Pope do it. Although Smurf is gone, Adrian is still facing a lengthy prison sentence. Will Deran abandon the Cody family after his mother’s death, or will he tell Adrian to leave without him?
“Craig (Ben Robson) struggles to adapt to a new pace of life,” the “Smurf” synopsis reveals. In the promo video for the TNT drama, Craig asks if people are going to come after the family now that Smurf is dead.
After Renn (Christina Ochoa) gave birth to their son, Craig has slowly begun embracing his role as a father. Once he learns his new family is in danger, how far will he go to protect Renn and their baby?
“Pope and J’s growing tension reaches a boiling point,” the “Animal Kingdom” Season 4 finale synopsis states. In the “Smurf” promo, Pope asks someone if they think they can run the family and take Smurf’s place.
J has been trying to prove that he is the best person to take Smurf’s spot as the leader of the Cody family. However, he put his spot in jeopardy after he lied to Pope about the cause of Angela’s (Emily Deschanel) relapse.
From the looks of the promo, it appears the teen will fail to gain his uncle’s trust. In the video, Pope tells J that he knows he’s been lying to them since the day he showed up at their home. However, J responds by insisting he did what he had to do.
J has been saving money since the day he moved into Smurf’s home. While she was in jail, he managed to steal three of her properties and has been hiding the money he made from the establishments.
Will J’s secrets ruin his chance of becoming the new leader of the Cody family?
The “Animal Kingdom” Season 4 finale airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. EDT on TNT.
Exclusive: See Denis Leary’s return for Animal Kingdom finale after big character death
Deran may have just lost his mother, but his absentee father is suddenly back in the picture.
EW can exclusively reveal that Denis Leary is returning as Billy in the Animal Kingdom season 4 finale. Watch a clip above of an allegedly sober Billy looking to make amends with Pope (Shawn Hatosy).
“Smurf” will pick up in the aftermath of Smurf’s (Ellen Barkin) death, with the Cody boys needing to put their grieving on hold to protect their reputation as past friends and enemies close in. In addition, Deran (Jake Weary) realizes there is only one way to keep Adrian (Spencer Treat Clark) safe, while Pope and J’s (Finn Cole) growing tension reaches a boiling point.
After the shocking exit of Ellen Barkin’s matriarch, executive producer John Wells talked EW through the decision. “We ended up spending a lot of time talking about: What do we do this year to keep shuffling the deck and mixing things up? It’s the animal kingdom, not everybody’s going to survive,” he said. “We were feeling that we were repeating a little bit the Smurf stories. We had told the Smurf stories in the present that we wanted to tell but what we were really interested in is how did she get to be Smurf? And that led to where we ended up. We came to the realization that the thing that would shake the family up most is if Smurf wasn’t there to hold them together anymore.”
The Animal Kingdom season finale airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on TNT. In July, the network announced it renewed the series for a fifth season.
