Overview : Britain is in the grip of a chilling recession… falling wages, rising prices, civil unrest – only the bankers are smiling. It’s 1783 and Ross Poldark returns from the American War of Independence to his beloved Cornwall to find his world in ruins: his father dead, the family mine long since closed, his house wrecked and his sweetheart pledged to marry his cousin. But Ross finds that hope and love can be found when you are least expecting it in the wild but beautiful Cornish landscape.

Poldark series 5 episode 6 review: Shock character death gave this series the boot up the backside it needed

No shade to Ned, but his shock demise was much-needed, giving a somewhat listless series a boot up the backside. We have only come to know the Captain, who represented a dangerous part of Poldark’s past, for just the one series, so the loss of the man himself wasn’t particularly moving, but rather how. Moments away from being hung, his guts removed and burned and then his body cut up, there was a pause in proceedings in which we sort of hoped he might be saved. But no. Turns out only the first nasty bit of the punishment would be carried out. Ned still died, just not screaming. It was the effect on his friends and his wife Kitty (Kerri McLean) that packed the emotional punch. The couple’s final goodbye in prison was heartbreaking, and Poldark openly sobbing with grief was a rare and welcome show of emotion. Under all the fuss about Turner’s glistening torso are some serious acting chops. The warnings of Dwight (Luke Norris) are coming back to haunt him next week, as he was brutally attacked in the closing moments of the episode. His association with Ned, who didn’t exactly help himself let’s be honest, has led him into grave danger.

Unlike previous weeks we have questions that we need answered. Who hit him? Where has he been taken and why? Is he still wanted for high treason? Small-town troubles and forbidden love are classic Poldark plots we still love. Cecily (Lily Dodsworth-Evans) and Geoffrey Charles’ (Freddie Wise) thwarted plot to elope was pure period drama escapism, while Eleanor Tomlinson has shone this series as Demelza handles her business in Cornwall. But things have got really exciting now. With only two episodes in the final series left, however, it might have come too late.
