‘The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3, Episode 12 Review: In ‘Sacrifice’ June Breaks Bad

Well I’m a bit at a loss for words after tonight’s episode of The Handmaid’s Tale.

If last week’s surprising episode made me pump my fists with joy—metaphorically speaking—well tonight’s episode made me sick to my stomach. I feel like I’m suffering from emotional whiplash.

This has always been a dark show. It’s always been disturbing. And all season long, June has slipped further and further into the morally gray “anti-hero” territory that’s defined the protagonists of shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.

But “Sacrifice” takes our heroine—or anti-heroine—to another level. I’ll get to that in a minute.

Two big things happen in the 12th episode of Season 3. First of all, we get confirmation that Serena betrayed Fred. This comes as no surprise. On my second viewing of last week’s episode, it was very clear that she had set him up. This week we find out why.

Visitation Rights
It’s not that Serena is getting Nichole back. She won’t ever get her back. She’s not even allowed to refer to herself as Nichole’s mother because, well, she isn’t. She’s just the woman who helped rape her mother and then, in a small sliver of redemption, helped rescue the child from Gilead’s torments.

Rather, Serena gets visitation rights. Luke and Moira have to bring the baby to wherever the Canadians and Americans are keeping Serena, and she gets a supervised visit. I suppose it’s better than living in Gilead where you aren’t even allowed to read and where voicing an opinion gets your finger chopped off. But it’s such a farce. What a magnificent trade for the enemies of Gilead. They get Fred Waterford and all they have to give up is . . . an hour or two a week for Serena to see the baby? And how long can that last?
